Young Children's Exposure to Community Violence

SUSAN VIG

Albert Einstein College of Medicine

Exposure to community violence can affect young children's development, even when the children are not direct victims of violence. This review explores the impact of community violence on young children, discusses some of the processes through which early development can be affected, and suggests the potential vulnerabilities of young children with developmental disabilities. Characteristics of young children's responses to stress and trauma are reviewed. Child, family, and community factors contributing to resilience are noted. Intervention approaches are described and suggestions offered for supporting children and families in order to reduce the negative impact of exposure to violence.
